Depends who they’re taking the piss out of. If you read it as a take on trump himself, yes: cheap shot. If you read it as a satire on how the more left leaning parts of the media see him, it’s pretty much standard Onion : take regular media attitudes to absurdity.

That’s actually a good question.

There are times where Trump deserves the media (and our) full scorn and perhaps sadly too often, however there’s also times where they go way overboard on the condemnation . I think i t’s a tad dear to go this far in terms of vilifying your commander- in- chief , even as satire, but perhaps not so outlandish if you consider another side as this being a jab at outlandish media rhetoric particularly regarding the whole Russian election meddling .

The scary thing about this is though is that while it seems completely ridiculous, in times of war, human sacrificial moves have been made for arguably even less value.

It actually works on many levels.

Meanwhile Trump has apparently decided that he’s fine with hundreds of covid deaths a day in the hopes that pretending coronavirus doesn’t exist will get him reelected.

And he seems fine with ignoring these Russian bounties in order to maintain the support of his pal Putin.

The idea Trump is willing to sacrifice Americans for personal gain really isn’t even satire (though the idea he’d personally kill them is absurd, he’s much too much of a coward for that).

At the same time, as I’ve thought about it and considered some of the other ops’ replies here, the piece could be read as The Onion satirizing the media reactions and being actually a jab at them , but the Liberals will be too obtuse to realize it. I visited New York City in December and on the way out, at La Guardia, I had a very enjoyable conversation with a custodian who was also a Jew. Guy was in his sixties and had already retired from a career as a public school custodian and was now working for the New York Port Authority. Anyhow, this guy was praising President Trump for moving the American embassy to Jerusalem. “That took guts !” he exclaimed. I told him that I had zero opinion on the politics of the matter, but that in so doing, Mr. Trump deserved no points for actual courage, because he had/has none. The move was entirely self-serving, as this is Mr. Trump’s sole motivation.

I would not waste my breath speaking to that man nor to anyone in his family. I will schadenfreude when his reign is over and prosecutors and investigators pick him and his family apart for the rest of their lives. I will also watch to see who remains loyal to him and for how long.

I read a few of your replies, and I agree with you, but I’d argue that nobody’s lives are worth joking about. I have made a conscious attempt in the last few years to eliminate joking about kill ing people or harming people from my conversation . I think it cheapens us as people and cheapens human life, which I think is part of the fundamental problems with our society - we don’t respect ourselves nor do we respect each other. Making casual comments, even jokes, about killing people just serves to dehumanize others.

Typo? I hope that’s a typo. My take, which I think is rational, is that we’re all equal and should be treated as such. I’m probably the least qualified person to make this call considering how little attention I pay to popular topics , but my take away is that BLM doesn’t mean they matter anymore than anyone else, it’s more about how a lot of lip service is paid to ideas of equality without actually making it so. Fixing it is another matter entirely.

The Onion piece bothers me as well. I think that’s because we both served and know what it’s like to have your life on the line.

I am making the claim that they do matter less , and that as a result all lives do not matter. At least not equally. They may to you and me, but to our society as a whole, they do not. That is my claim.

I look at it this way: consider a cafeteria tray with a bunch of blueberries on it. All of the blueberries are bunched up at one end. Leveling the tray by setting it on a table will stop the berries from shifting, but it won’t help any of the berries get more evenly disbursed upon the tray. You have to do some tilting of the tray back the other way.

I’m not disagreeing with you, just trying to illuminate my position.
